PCDA DI

Dear friends,

January of a new year brings feelings of new beginnings, a fresh start, new goals, and renewed energy.  As PCDA looks forward to the new year, we have many exciting plans: We are looking forward to growing the Parent Group, seeing our drama performance at the Pasadena Playhouse, enjoying the Note-ables choir, offering a new vocational workshop, adding our parent Floortime class in Spanish, presenting a feeding conference at Shriner’s Hospital, helping with library time at the Altadena library, collaborating with Kidspace and Huntington library, and training for the Pasadena police department!  Please follow us in this newsletter and social media to learn about all of our activities, and ways you can join in volunteering or participating!  Happy New Year!

PCDA Program Spotlight:
Teen Club and Teen Buddies!

On Saturday, December 15th, our Teen Club and Teen Buddies participated in Teens Give Back! They made school supply packs for children, snack packs for the homeless, ornaments for ill children, Christmas cards to veterans and elderly, hygiene packs for the homeless, and cat toys for the humane society! Check out the photos below to see all their hard work:
Volunteer Spotlight:
Temple City Boy Scout Troop 174

Just in time before PCDA closed for the holidays, volunteers Joel Ishii, Morgan Ogata, Noah Ogata and his fellow boy scouts friends from Troop 174 in Temple City (Gene Naono, Alex Kwan, Alvin Zhou, David Siegrist, Daniel Siegrist) spent their Saturday on December 22nd helping PCDA move furniture out of several therapy rooms to make room for newly donated furniture from Bob's Discount Furniture. Thanks to Bob's Discount Furniture and our dedicated volunteers, we will have newly furnished therapy space for the children who receive services at PCDA to enjoy.   These volunteers worked amazingly well as a team to also help with sorting toys from PCDA Annual Holiday Toy Drive to be distributed after the new year.  A BIG thanks to all of our volunteers for helping with the last volunteer projects in 2018  and giving us much to look forward to in 2019!

Programs & Services

The Young Actors Squad (YAS) fresh from their debut at the Teen Club Art Show in December, are pleased to announce their first full performance at the historic PASADENA PLAYHOUSE on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2019, at 6:30 PM!  The Squad, consisting of Esteban Araujo, Amanda Arrellano, Tristan Delbis, Myles Manning, RJ Romero, and Jeremiah Ward, will present their unique brand of improvisational derring-do in the Carrie Hamilton Theatre, upstairs at the Pasadena Playhouse.  Come one, come all, and enjoy!

And, if you are a teen from 13 to 17 years old who likes to play interactive games, develop characters and scenes, and make great friends, or if you know of someone who fits that description, we would like to encourage you to JOIN THE SQUAD !!  We will be recruiting new members after the performance in February, with a NEW SERIES to start in March.  If you are interested, please contact Lead Facilitator Kristen Williams at 626-793-7350 x. 275.

Book of the Month-

The Snowman by Raymond Briggs

This book is a beautifully illustrated story about a child’s dream. Wordless picture books are perfect for an adult and child to share together. You can explore the pictures and decide together what the characters might be doing and saying.

Nutrient of the Month- Phosphorous

Phosphorus is a mineral that plays a key role in all of our body’s cell membranes. It is important to healthy bones, as well as energy, acid-base, and fluid balance. Many foods contain phosphorus, which means most people meet their daily needs without thinking about it. It is often forgotten, but that does not mean it is not essential to our life! Common sources include fish, mushrooms, cow’s milk, yogurt, cheese, dark leafy greens, meat, eggs, and poultry. Try this kid-friendly quiche recipe full of phosphorus!
