PCDA DI

Dear Friends,

In August, the American Academy of Pediatrics published an article about the importance of play:

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/119/1/182

This report supports what we do here at PCDA every day!  We use playful interactions and the child’s interests to encourage shared attention, initiative, exploration, creativity, challenges and problem solving.  Children gain in communication, social skills and learning.  Now that children are headed back to school, let’s be sure that there is still time for play every day- and hopefully parents can join in as well!  We are getting ready for our big Harvest Moon Magic! Gala on September 30.  I invite you to join us on this special night to celebrate play, families, and PCDA!

Warmly,

Dr. Diane
Diane Cullinane, MD

2018 PCDA Achievement Award: Joshua Ray Cabrera

Joshua, a member of PCDA’s Teen Club, is a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School. His interests include math, engineering, computer animation, and robotics. Joshua began participating in PCDA’s Social-Emotional Development Intervention (SEDI)/Floortime program after being diagnosed with autism at age five. He currently uses a technology device to help him overcome speech delays and loss of sound when speaking. At age 13, Joshua started Teen Club, and he enjoys it a lot. His mother, Marissa, shares: “He has grown so much, from being shy and reserved to being confident, learning how to ask for help, and taking charge in any situation. He loves going to Teen Club and feels like it is his safe space.” After graduating, Joshua plans to attend college and hopes to one day get into UCLA. He would like to become an engineer and contribute to his community.

Joshua will be honored at PCDA's
10th Annual Harvest Moon Gala on September 30th!

SELF-DETERMINATION
INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS

You may have heard about a new program for Regional Center services called SELF DETERMINATION. But what exactly is this?

Traditionally, Regional Center services are determined through decisions reached by the IPP Team, including the parents, the Service Coordinator, and the consumer whenever possible. Recommended services must be approved by the Regional Center Clinical Team and only certain programs which have been "vendored"
by the Regional Center are eligible to be funded.

Under the new method, known as “Self Determination,” consumers and families who choose to take a more pro-active role in determining their own needs and priorities will receive an annual budget, which they can then use to purchase necessary services based on a person-centered planning process led by an Independent Facilitator.

Please CLICK HERE to learn more about this service and upcoming informational sessions.

The Deadline to sign up for the Self-Determination lottery is
September 17, 2018,  5:00 pm.

***Families MUST attend an official Information Session before the deadline in order to sign up!***

Book of the Month- Owen by Kevin Henkes

A child who is transitioning into preschool or kindergarten might really appreciate this story about a mouse named Owen and his special fuzzy yellow blanket.  We are able to understand Owen’s love for the blanket, the disapproval of a nosey neighbor, and his mother’s loving and resourceful solution to help Owen navigate from his world at home to school.

Nutrient of the Month - Vitamin C!

Vitamin C plays an important role in growth and development. It is also an antioxidant that acts as a key part of the body’s immune system and wound repair. Vitamin C is found in many fruits and vegetables.

Zucchini and other squashes are rich in vitamin C and are in season throughout the summer and fall months. Try using this fun recipe with kids to explore the texture of zucchini as it changes from being raw to cooked!

Grilled Zucchini Roll-Ups

Ingredients

  • 3 small zucchini
  • 2 cups raw spinach
  • 1/3 cup basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1-2 ounces goat cheese
  • Salt and pepper
  • Parsley or other herbs of choice for seasoning

 Instructions

  1. Preheat grill or pan to medium.
  2. Cut zucchini lengthwise in to thin slices so that they look like long, flat noodles.
  3. Brush zucchini slices with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  4. Grill zucchini until tender (a few minutes each side).
  5. Store zucchini in refrigerator until cool.
  6. In a small bowl, combine goat cheese, herbs, and lemon juice. Mash together!
  7. Scoop a spoonful of the cheese mixture on to a cooled zucchini slice. Top with a few spinach and basil leaves.
  8. Roll up!
  9. Repeat!
