PCDA DI

Dear Friends,

Summer is almost here!  Please consider the many programs and activities available at PCDA during the summer.  For children, there are summer camp, art, dance, and music lessons, Special Olympics Young Athletes, or perhaps some extra help with social skills or other therapies.  For parents, we have our Orientation to Floortime class and our Parent Support Group.  For all our adult friends, I invite you to come to our Rosé Soirée on July 15th and save the date for our annual gala on September 30th.  Perhaps you would like to volunteer to help with our gala or other activities?  And don’t miss our Note-ables choir performances at the street fair on June 9th, and at the Rose Bowl on 4th of July! Most of all, I hope you all plan time for fun together.  Thank you for being part of our PCDA family!

Sincerely,

Dr. Diane

Program Highlights!

Mother’s Day Project by Thursday Social Skills Group:

The Social Skills group wanted to make a fun gift for their mothers. They worked together and decided that they wanted to an art project. We gathered supplies: 8x10 canvases, crayons, hair dryers, a glue gun and lots of newspaper. The first week, they created their ideas and placed the crayons on the canvases. The next week they melted the crayons and let them dry. The third week they put on the finishing touches and gift wrapped the presents to give to their moms. Needless to say, it was a big hit and worth it to see the mother’s smiles when they got them!

Teen Buddies/Teen Club Baskin Robbins Outing:

Some of the Teen Buddies and Teen Club groups recently had an outing to Baskin Robbins in Alhambra. The manager, Young-Woong Yang, welcomed our teens to come learn about working at Baskin Robbins, how to give friendly customer service, scoop and serve ice cream, and work the cash register! He also gave the teens a tour of the back freezer, taught them how to decorate a cake, and make waffle cones. It was such a fun experience for our PCDA teens! Thank you Baskin Robbins!

Resources for Families

SELF-DETERMINATION
INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS

You may have heard about a new program for Regional Center services called SELF DETERMINATION. But what exactly is this?

Traditionally, Regional Center services are determined through decisions reached by the IPP Team, including the parents, the Service Coordinator, and the consumer whenever possible. Recommended services must be approved by the Regional Center Clinical Team and only certain programs which have been "vendored"
by the Regional Center are eligible to be funded.

Under the new method, known as “Self Determination,” consumers and families who choose to take a more pro-active role in determining their own needs and priorities will receive an annual budget, which they can then use to purchase necessary services based on a person-centered planning process led by an Independent Facilitator.

Please CLICK HERE to learn more about this service and upcoming informational sessions.

Be sure and go to an informational session if you might be interested in being part of this program.

Book o
f the Month -
Egg by Kevin Henkes

Egg is a wordless picture book about 4 eggs, 3 birds and a surprise. Wordless picture books are perfect for adults and young children to share, providing a structure for discussion and mutual development of a narrative sequence. In this delightfully illustrated book the characters learn about waiting, expectations, surprise outcomes, disappointment, loneliness and friendship.

Nutrient of the Month - Vitamin K!

Vitamin K is very important for helping your body to stop bleeding and heal. It also plays a role in healthy bones. Dark, leafy greens, such as kale, spinach, chard, collard greens, and parsley, are rich in vitamin K. Asparagus is also a very rich source of vitamin K that provides 100% of daily recommended intake for children in just ½ cup! It is in season now and on sale at many grocery stores.

Try this yummy Creamy Pesto Pasta with tomatoes and asparagus as a flavorful and casual way to introduce asparagus to your children.

Ingredients:

  • 1 box pasta (penne similar in shape to asparagus, which is nice but can be any pasta)
  • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • ½ medium onion (diced)
  • 1 pound asparagus (ends trimmed)
  • 1-pint cherry tomatoes
  • ½ cup creamy pesto sauce (jarred or homemade)
    • Homemade ingredients may include: ½ cup cream + 1cup minced herbs, nuts, and cheeses + ½ cup mozzarella or parmesan cheese + salt and pepper to taste (blend in food processor)
    • Jarred may include 1 jar pesto sauce + ½ cup cream (or alfredo sauce)
  • Mozzarella or parmesan cheese for topping

Instructions:

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook pasta according to package instructions.
  2. While water heats up, chop onion, asparagus (cut into 1” pieces), and tomatoes (cut in halves).
  3. Heat skillet to medium and add oil or butter, then add onion and cook until tender.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low and stir in tomato and asparagus. Cover and cook until asparagus is tender to a fork. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Add cooked pasta and creamy pesto sauce.
  6. Stir gently until warm.
  7. Serve and top with mozzarella or parmesan cheese.

Notes:

Top pasta with chicken or shrimp for added protein.
If it seems like the pasta needs more sauce, drizzle with olive oil and mix.
