PCDA DI

Dear Friends,

The programs and services we are able to offer here at PCDA continue to expand. Using the DIRFloortime approach, our staff work together as a team, along with parents, family, and caregivers to help children reach their developmental goals in speech, movement, play, behavior and social skills.  There are services for infants and toddlers, preschoolers, school age, teens and young adults.  We are so happy to now have a PCDA parents support group, along with classes for parents and caregivers.  I invite you to come to our annual Open House, on Tuesday, May 22nd to learn more about the wide range of activities available and please save-the-date for our Annual Rosé Soirée which will be held on Sunday, July 15th.  I look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Dr. Diane

People of PCDA
Client Spotlight of the Month: Andy

"When Andy joined PCDA’s Teen Club program, he was preoccupied with "stranger danger." He couldn't tell who to trust.  Every week, Teen Club gave him the chance to experience activities in the community, without his parents, and he blossomed.  The friends he made at Teen Club are still his friends today, at 23 years old.  Andy’s Teen Club experience helped him develop a strong sense of himself and his community.  It enabled him to develop the self-confidence and social skills needed to land a job as a Courtesy Clerk at Ralph's. It’s been a wonderful experience for him to work in the community and allows him to help people, which he says is his favorite part of the job.  In May, Andy will celebrate his 5-year anniversary at Ralph's -- quite an achievement for someone who was once afraid of strangers. Thank you PCDA!"

DI of the Month: Taryn Wong

We are honored to announce Taryn Wong as the DI of the Month!

Taryn began working at PCDA as a Developmental Interventionist in 2016 and has shown great dedication to supporting her families in developing their children’s social and emotional skills.  Her experience in working with children on the Autism spectrum in the community guides the ideas and strategies she brings into her weekly sessions with parents and children.  Taryn has Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Dance from Chapman University.  She has used her experience and talents to create a new movement and dance class at PCDA, along with the Creative Arts department.  We’d like to recognize Taryn on this achievement and thank her for her passion and creativity in all that she does at PCDA.

SELF-DETERMINATION
INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS

You may have heard about a new program for Regional Center services called SELF DETERMINATION. But what exactly is this?

Traditionally, Regional Center services are determined through decisions reached by the IPP Team, including the parents, the Service Coordinator, and the consumer whenever possible. Recommended services must be approved by the Regional Center Clinical Team and only certain programs which have been "vendored"
by the Regional Center are eligible to be funded.

Under the new method, known as “Self Determination,” consumers and families who choose to take a more pro-active role in determining their own needs and priorities will receive an annual budget, which they can then use to purchase necessary services based on a person-centered planning process led by an Independent Facilitator.

Please CLICK HERE to learn more about this service and upcoming informational sessions.

Be sure and go to an informational session if you might be interested in being part of this program.

PCDA in the Community

Julie Miller, Head of Occupational Therapy and Feeding Programs at PCDA, and Jessica Ibardolaza Hall, PCDA Occupational Therapist, recently went to the American Occupational Therapy Association's annual conference in Salt Lake City!

They also spent time with Karla Ausderau, and Kimberly Wilkinson, who both previously worked at PCDA!

THANK YOU to the Rotary Club of Pasadena for awarding PCDA with a community grant! We appreciate your support in helping us improve the lives of children with autism and other developmental disabilities and their families. We are honored to be among many other well-deserving non-profits who also received grants.
PCDA also recently received a grant from the Rotarty Club of South Pasadena! This grant will go towards upgrading our treatment rooms! A huge thank you to the Rotary Club of South Pasadena for their support!

PCDA is thrilled to receive a grant from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts for our music therapy program! This grant will help children with autism and other special needs use their creativity and respond to music in order to build functional emotional development. Thank you Pasadena Showcase!

Book o
f the Month -
Horrible Bear by Anne Dyckman

This book is a story about accidental mistakes, understanding another person’s intentions, and forgiveness told through simple words and colorful, humorous illustrations.

Nutrient of the Month - Chromium!

Chromium is a trace metal that very important to helping insulin work. The body needs insulin to use glucose for energy.

Whole grain products, beef, poultry, fish, and broccoli are great sources of chromium. Broccoli tends to grow well in California all year round. Be creative and use it in salads, cooked as a side with a variety of toppings, in a soup, or in a casserole or pasta dish. Florets are a fun texture to explore with toddlers, but don’t worry if they do not eat it! Show them how you like it and explain what it feels/tastes like. It often takes 10 or more times presenting a new food before a child will be interested in eating it, so be patient!
