PCDA DI

Dear Friends,

Did you know PCDA has a two-part mission: providing direct services for children and families and professional training? Our goal is for as many professionals as possible to know about the DIRFloortime approach so they can provide developmental-relationship based care to children wherever they teach or work. DIRFloortime is an approach that is used in all of the different services at PCDA. If you would like to learn more about this approach, there are two opportunities soon: We offer an Orientation to Floortime class for parents every month (which is vendored by the regional center); and in March, we will be presenting a one-day conference on Feeding Challenges for Infants and Toddlers using the DIR approach, sponsored by the California Infant Development Association. We welcome you to come, as well as invite you to join the many other activities this month.

Sincerely,

Dr. Diane

People of PCDA
Client Spotlight of the Month: Emma, age 6

Not only is Emma using more words and making more eye contact, but her Speech Therapist also gave us a lot of advice on communicating, which helped to improve our relationship with Emma.

DI of the Month: Alissa Martinez

We are honored to announce Alissa Martinez as our January DI of the month. Alissa has her BA in Communicative Disorders and a minor in Child and Adolescent Development from California State University, Fullerton. She worked at the Children’s Center at CSUF with 9-15 month old infants in an interactive learning environment, and she also designed and facilitated developmentally appropriate activities for a group of 2-20 children. Alissa has shown such great growth over her six months working at PCDA. She exhibits a great understanding of DIR/Floortime in her work, she’s built great relationships with her clients and families, and she is very thoughtful in her intervention strategies, individualizing them for each client. Alissa services clients in our SEDI, Social Skills and Teen Buddies programs. We greatly appreciate Alissa and her dedication to her work at PCDA!

Book of the Month - Owen & Mzee:
The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship
by Isabella Hatkoff

This true story of the friendship between a baby hippo and a giant tortoise is interesting to children of all ages.

Although the text is too complicated for many children, you can simplify the story and look at the real-life photographs together. The themes of this story do include separation, loss and finding a new home. It is a good book to begin conversations with your child about recovering from sad events.

Nutrient of the Month - Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3, also known as niacin, plays an important role in helping the body make energy out of food. Many foods are good sources of niacin, including meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, peanuts, and yeast extracts.

Try the simple Rainbow Chicken and Veggies recipe below for your family (click the pic for a how-to video), and allow your children to make a rainbow on their plate for dinner!

Ingredients

  • 2 c. cherry tomatoes
  • 3 c. baby carrots
  • 2 yellow bell peppers, thinly sliced
  • 1 large head broccoli, florets removed
  • 2 small red onions, cut into wedges
  • 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts, cubed
  • 2 c. cooked brown rice
For the Marinade
  • 1/3 c. extra-virgin olive oil
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 1/4 c. freshly chopped cilantro
  • kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400º. On two large sheet pans, place tomatoes, carrots, bell peppers, broccoli, red onion, and chicken.
  2. Make marinade: In a medium bowl, combine olive oil, lime juice, and cilantro and season with salt and pepper. Whisk until combined. Pour marinade over veggies and chicken and season with more salt and pepper. Toss until completely combined.
  3. Bake until vegetables are tender and chicken is cooked through, 25 minutes. Divide cooked rice among five containers and top with roasted veggies and chicken. (Note: Cooked poultry stays good in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. We recommend freezing your Thursday and Friday meals for best results.)
