From the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

As we approach Thanksgiving, I reflect on how fortunate we are to have PCDA. We have a remarkable group of professionals who are dedicated to advancing each child’s development through attunement to the child’s ideas, close partnership with parents, and helping children to grow into thoughtful, kind and considerate young adults. In addition, we have a beautiful facility, and large group of volunteers and supporters who make this all possible. I occasionally have the opportunity to travel and teach in other countries, and I am reminded of how exceptional it is to have these services for children and families. Thank you to all who contribute to this great effort.

Thank you,
Diane Cullinane, M.D.

SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH: Ethan Uy

PCDA’s 2017 Achievement Award was given to Ethan, a recent graduate of PCDA’s Teen Club and a freshman at Citrus College with plans to transfer to Cal Poly Pomona and major in Engineering. Ethan went to Arcadia High School, where he excelled in math and science and graduated with a 3.0 GPA. Ethan was also a member of the Arcadia High School Marching Band all four years, playing the alto saxophone. Ethan’s other hobbies include movies, video games, hiking and cooking. Ethan joined the PCDA Teen Club in 2013, and the outings and meetings helped him to make friends, gain confidence and express himself. According to Ethan’s mom Tina, “The Teen Club helped Ethan to communicate his thoughts and feelings. He has made several friends from PCDA, and they have had outings to movies and spent time hanging out at our home. I am glad Ethan came to PCDA because it has helped him became the fine young man he is today!” Congratulations, Ethan, and best wishes for your continued happiness and success!

DI OF THE MONTH: Rebecca Read

We are honored to announce Rebecca Read as the DI of the Month for October. She has been working with PCDA as a Developmental Interventionist since November 2016. Rebecca has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego. Rebecca has experience working with infants through adults. Prior to PCDA, Rebecca worked as a teaching assistant at a school in Pasadena. She also worked as a lab assistant at UCSD working with adolescents at the Eating Disorder Center for Treatment and Research. Rebecca has shown a lot of growth over the past year, building great relationships with her clients and their families. Rebecca has had the opportunity to work with clients in our Building Blocks, SEDI, Social Skills, and Teen Club programs. We greatly appreciate Rebecca for her dedication and hard work.

Book of the Month:
Waiting is Not Easy
By Mo Willems
PCDA DI

In the latest book in the series, Gerald loses patience with Piggie when he is told that a surprise is in store, but that he must wait for it. Piggie knows that the surprise is worth the wait, but she has to contend with Gerald’s impatience. The story is about friendship, human emotions, and the beauty in the world around us. Simple words and expressive illustrations make this a good choice for parents and young children to read together.

Nutrient of the Month:
Carotenoids

Carotenoids are red, orange and yellow pigments produced by plants. These phytochemicals are known to be good for your skin and eyes and may also play a role in preventing cancer. Carotenoids are found in many vegetables, such as pumpkin, sweet potato, butternut squash, peppers, and tomatoes.

Pumpkin Pie is a great dessert choice for all members of the family this time of year. It is high in protein and has a vegetable as a main ingredient. It can be altered to be lower in calories while still tasting good. Try this pumpkin pie recipe at one of this year’s holiday dinner for kids and adults to enjoy!

Customize Your Pie!
Casein (milk) free ideas:

  • Use ¾ cup coconut milk instead of evaporated milk. If mixture is not thick enough for your taste, add 1 tablespoon tapioca flour
  • Use a tub of Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese instead of evaporated milk (contains soy)

Gluten-free ideas:

  • Go crustless!
  • Use a gluten free pie crust
  • Use ground nuts as a crust
  • Make a crust from ground gluten-free cereal

Egg-free ideas:

  • Use 4 tablespoons corn starch
  • Use one-banana instead of 2 large eggs
  • Use ½ cup of applesauce instead of 2 large eggs

Ideas for less calories:

  • Use fat-free evaporated milk
  • Use 16 ounces fat-free cottage cheese instead of milk. Put cottage cheese in blender first to make smooth. This will make more of a cheesecake like texture
