From the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Every summer as I observe children out of school, I am reminded of the importance of play. In play, children have the opportunity to enjoy doing skills they have already mastered and pretending about ideas that bring them joy. They may challenge themselves to explore or attempt new feats, as they choose, at their own pace. Their relationships with siblings and peers advance as they create memories together. Parents can support this wonderful time of summer by taking their child to new places, and then follow their child’s lead to discover and play!

We have a grown-up event coming up on Sunday called Rose Soiree- I hope you can join us for a summer afternoon at the picturesque Blacker House. Thank you for your support.

Thank you,
Diane Cullinane, M.D.
Executive Director

PCDA Music Therapy Teaching Tour

The PCDA Creative Arts Team was a proud presenter at the 2017 World Congress for Music Therapy in Tsukuba, Japan on July 7th!

The presentation was titled, Coaching, Connecting and Creating: Music Therapy Within a Relationship-Based Family Centered Approach for Children.

The presentation helped to increase awareness of the use and practice of the DIR®Floortime™ model within the field of music therapy. Within this presentation, the team discussed the importance of valuing the Parent-Child relationship as an important factor of development and demonstrated how to support these relationships using creative music techniques. PCDA's presentation had over 9 different countries attend from around the world including, Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand. Many music therapists have expressed interest in the work being done at PCDA as well as continuing their own specialized DIR® Floortime™ Training from their native country!

The Creative Arts Team would like to say Thank You to all the individuals who helped support the team in getting to Japan! We are truly proud to be part of the PCDA Team and look forward to more opportunities to spread our knowledge of Music Therapy and the DIR® Floortime™ model.

Book of the Month:
Chalk
By Bill Thomson

Wordless picture books are great for helping children learn to use language to describe their world. The book Chalk is an exciting story told entirely through realistic looking illustrations. The narrative is about 3 children who discover a magical bag of chalk that makes the pictures they draw come alive. The children become frightened when one child draws a t rex, but they also solve the problem independently by drawing rain which dissolves the dinosaur. This is a wonderful book for an adult and child to explore together, discovering imagination and problem solving across a range of emotions.

Nutrient of the Month:
Vitamin C

Vitamin C plays an important role in growth and development. It is also an antioxidant that acts as a key part of the body’s immune system and wound repair. Vitamin C is found in many fruits and vegetables.

Zucchini and other squashes are rich in vitamin C and are in season throughout the summer and fall months. Try using this fun recipe with kids to explore the texture of zucchini as it changes from being raw to cooked!

Grilled Zucchini Roll-Ups

Ingredients

  • 3 small zucchini
  • 2 cups raw spinach
  • 1/3 cup basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1-2 ounces goat cheese
  • Salt and pepper
  • Parsley or other herbs of choice for seasoning

Instructions

  1. Preheat grill or pan to medium.
  2. Cut zucchini lengthwise in to thin slices so that they look like long, flat noodles.
  3. Brush zucchini slices with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  4. Grill zucchini until tender (a few minutes each side).
  5. Store zucchini in refrigerator until cool.
  6. In a small bowl, combine goat cheese, herbs, and lemon juice. Mash together!
  7. Scoop a spoonful of the cheese mixture on to a cooled zucchini slice. Top with a few spinach and basil leaves.
  8. Roll up!
  9. Repeat!

We are honored to have your support – thank you,
