From the Executive Director

Dear friends,

Last month I described one key feature of the DIRFloortime approach is that a child’s motivation for development is viewed as stemming from the joy inherent in relationships, rather than behaviors occurring simply to obtain a reward or consequence for ‘correct’ behavior. Another significant aspect of the DIR approach is the attention and respect given to individual differences. In DIR we celebrate each child’s unique interests and talents and strive to nurture those interests and build on them to support overall development, rather than using a child’s special interest as something to be discouraged, or limit access to an interest so that it is only allowed as a reward. Each child has a unique array of interests and challenges and we see tremendous growth as we join the child in their interests and help them to grow through sharing those interests with us. I hope these brief highlights of DIRFloortime inspire you to learn more and to support our efforts to offer this to more children and families. Parents and grandparents, please consider coming to our Orientation to Floortime classes!

Thank you,
Diane Cullinane, M.D.

In the Spotlight: Audrey

“Audrey has really blossomed since being at PCDA. Our bond is so much stronger because we have been able to connect with her through music therapy and her other therapies. She has learned so much from being a part of social skills and has learned a lot from her peer interactions. Her social skills facilitator has been amazing. I feel that Audrey is safe to be the unique person that she is here at PCDA. We feel so supported by PCDA and we just love PCDA!” - Sylvia Pabon, Mother

Shirley joined PCDA in June 2016 as a volunteer upon completing her B.S. in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at UCLA. In her role as a volunteer, she has supported our agency with various programs and events such as YAP and creative arts camp. Book of the Month:
Waiting Is Not Easy
by Mo Willems

Just like the other Elephant and Piggie books, “Waiting is Not Easy” is fun and has a good lesson….good things come to those who wait! Gerald the Elephant is having a hard time waiting for Piggie’s surprise. In the end the surprise is well worth the waiting.

Nutrient of the Month:
Copper

Copper is a mineral that is central to building strong tissue, maintaining healthy amounts of blood, and helping the body make energy.

Sesame seeds, nuts, mushrooms, dark-leafy greens, and legumes are great sources of copper. Try making this healthy lentil salad with your children. They can add ingredients, mix and stir after you have done the preparation.

Lentil Salad

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked lentils (Trader Joe’s sells a nice version of ready to serve lentils http://www.traderjoes.com/fearless-flyer/article/1533 ) or you can purchase dried lentils and boil until soft
  • 1 cup chopped kale
  • ¼ cup chopped parsley
  • 1 small tomato (chopped)
  • ¼ cup chopped red onion (optional)
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 1-2 lemon
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Chop vegetables.
  2. Add cooked lentils to medium sized mixing bowl.
  3. Add chopped vegetables, olive oil and salt and pepper. Mix well.
  4. Cut lemons in half, remove seeds, and squeeze over bowl of lentil salad. Mix well.
  5. Enjoy!

We are honored to have your support – thank you,
May 2017 Donors!
