From the Executive Director

Dear friends,

April is Autism Awareness month. There are so many families that have a child, sometimes two or more children, with autism and this is the month to focus on that community. You probably have heard the statistics: approximately 1 in 68 children have a diagnosis of ASD. Here at PCDA we are able to provide help and hope to so many children and families as they learn to build on their strengths, overcome barriers, and become stronger, caring, and creative individuals. Using a DIRFloortime approach, we focus on building relationships and honoring individual interests. It’s wonderful to see the kindness, smiles, and pride in children and families as they advance. Please support PCDA to continue to strengthen our programs, and join us in the many activities going on this month.

Thank you,
Diane Cullinane, M.D.

In the Spotlight – Vincent Rojas (age 7)

PCDA Spotlight

“I really want to thank the team of PCDA, especially the Department of Speech and Language Department. Maybe saying thank you it is not enough. My family didn't only receive speech therapy; we also received support and consistent care for my son. To be very honest, since my son’s diagnosis, I felt very alone, dealing all the issues by myself and not knowing where to go or what to do. I was scared most of the time. Now, here at PCDA, I don't feel alone anymore on this journey with my son’s diagnosis. I feel that I have a team and support for my son Vincent. Thank you very much to the clinicians at PCDA for showing care and love to my son.”

Conservatorship Presentation

The 3rd Annual Conservatorship presentation by Joseph Lee from Lee Green Attorney at Law was a success. Thank you to those that joined the discussion.

When asked, "If you could leave parents with one thought about Conservatorship, what would it be?" Here is what Mr. Lee had to say: “It is never too late to have a conservatorship filed. You can always file when it is needed despite your child’s age. Also, you can tailor your child’s conservatorship so that it will fit your child. One size does not fit all.”

Congratulations to Nicole Wiederecht and Amanda Aaronian for completing their 6 month music therapy internship with PCDA! We wish them the best with their future endeavors!

Thank you to everyone that attended our special screening of Asperger’s Are Us at the Laemmle’s Playhouse 7 in Pasadena!

Book of the Month:
Rosie's Walk
written by Pat Hutchins

Rosie the hen is taking a leisurely walk around the farm and unknowingly leading a fox on a precarious adventure. This simple story has delightful pictures that will encourage young children to talk about the fox’s misadventures.

Nutrient of the Month:
Vitamin B!

Vitamin B6 plays a vital role in red blood cell production, which is how our bodies get oxygen and make energy. It is also very important to brain health. Foods rich in vitamin B6 include meats, fish, potatoes, spinach and bananas.

Our PCDA team makes this B6 rich recipe all the time in clinic. Give it a try with your kids!
