From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
The developmental, relationship-based approach that we use here, called “DIR Floortime” is based on the idea that children learn through interactions with people and the feelings of love, care, and joy that are shared in relationships. This is the basis for all learning, especially the capacities for initiative, creativity and engaging in problem-solving toward a shared goal. Fortunately, there is more and more appreciation of the value of social-emotional aspects of a child’s development, in contrast to rote learning and simply following commands. If you would like to learn more about DIR Floortime, please come to one of the Orientation classes (which are vendored by Regional Centers). And please support our work through your donations (click here), as we strive to increase awareness of DIR and offer more resources to the children and families in our community.
Thank you,
Diane Cullinane, M.D.
Executive Director

Volunteer of the Month: Shirley Deng!
|
Shirley has been a wonderful volunteer who has supported many different PCDA programs and events this year. Shirley lent a hand at PCDA's Move-a-Thon in the spring as she interacted with children and their families, as well as stayed to clean up. Later in the fall season, Shirley offered her help again at PCDA's Harvest Moon event where she was instrumental in helping with the silent auction and clean up needs-she even recruited a friend to help! In addition to supporting special events, Shirley has been a valuable asset to PCDA's Young Athletes Program, Occupational Therapy Department, and Teen Buddies Program. The children love her as much as our staff, who appreciate her team spirit and kind demeanor. Shirley is always on time, always available to support in any way possible, and goes the extra steps to check in with her supervisor on what's needed for each session. She has a positive attitude and is generally gracious to everyone. Most recently, Shirley really helped in all areas that needed support for the annual Teen Art Show at Pasadena Central Library.
We all appreciate Shirley's efforts and continued dedication to PCDA! Thank you for all you do, Shirley! We love having you as part of the PCDA Volunteer Team!
