From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
I hope you will be joining us on September 17th for our annual Harvest Moon gala! Each year we celebrate three outstanding individuals as our honorees. Come and meet them, enjoy a great auction, dinner and program at a beautiful home in South Pasadena. Not only will you enjoy a fun evening but you will be supporting the important work of the team of professionals at PCDA. Together we make a difference in the lives of so many. I look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Diane Cullinane, M.D.

In the Spotlight
My son, Sean Logan, has been part of the PCDA Teen Buddies program since 2013. We have seen growth in an increased involvement and participation since his initial start of the program. The relationships and facilitation of clinical resources during his participation in the program has made a difference. He was noticeably so excited to participate in the annual 2016 PCDA's Carwash Fundraiser with Teen Buddies and Teen Club. Last year he needed more direction on focusing his interest, relating to peers, and process of how to wash the cars. But this year he happily washed the cars with his friends and was able to be involved with less prompting from adults. He showed interest in what his peers were doing, imitating and expressing interest in doing the same things. He also was quick to learn how to dry off the cars, with minimal adult support. It was good to see the Facilitators keeping the kids safe and aware when the cars were pulling in and backing out of the washing area. Overall it was a great experience to see Sean's developing social skills in practice during this event, we look forward to his seeing his continued growth.
J. Logan

Activating Our Self-Defined Strengths:
Self-Reflection in Parenting
As I have been preparing for our next Orientation to Floortime series, I’ve been thinking about how to bring the materials alive for all our participants, and I find myself drawn to the higher cognitive milestones identified by Dr. Greenspan – especially Milestone 9. We tend to focus much of our attention on the first six social-emotional milestones, since they are so foundational, but I find that the 9th Milestone is the one that continually challenges me and provides a window into new insights in my own development, both personally and professionally. What is this powerful Milestone? It’s the capacity for self-reflection.

Nutrient of the Month: Zinc
|
|
|
Zinc is a mineral that plays a key role in the immune and digestive systems. It also promotes healthy skin and vision. Remind your growing children that zinc is something they keep the germs away as they are headed back to school!
Animal proteins, such as beef, yogurt and turkey, as well as plant products, such as spinach, seeds, lentils, and fortified whole grains, are good sources of zinc. Try making this zinc filled yogurt dip with your children to enjoy with a variety of crackers, chips or on breads!
Spinach Yogurt Dip
Ingredients
- 8 ounces (1 cup) plain Greek yogurt
- 1 cup frozen (thaw and dry) or fresh spinach (diced)
- ½ cup thinly sliced scallions (optional)
- 1 tablespoon fresh dill (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ingredients and stir.
- Refrigerate.
Serve with sliced vegetables, whole grain crackers, or whole grain pita bread or toast.
